Hair Loss

Hair loss: what actually works

Most hair-loss products on the market do nothing. Two interventions have strong evidence: finasteride and minoxidil. Combined, they're the standard of care for male-pattern hair loss. Telehealth makes both accessible.

Finasteride: the workhorse

Finasteride (1mg oral, daily) blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT. DHT is the androgen that miniaturizes hair follicles. ~80% of men stop shedding within 6-12 months; ~60% regrow. Side effects: a small (~2-4%) rate of sexual side effects in trials.

Minoxidil: blood flow, not hormones

Minoxidil widens blood vessels around hair follicles, prolonging the growth phase. Comes as topical (Rogaine, 5%) or low-dose oral (1.25-5mg). Oral has stronger results; topical has fewer systemic effects. Combining with finasteride is standard practice.

Why telehealth fits

Diagnosis is largely visual. Telehealth clinicians review photos, screen for thyroid issues, and prescribe. Synchronous video isn't necessary in most cases. Expect to pay $25-50/month for combined therapy via compounded brands.
