TRICARE Prime and Select, plus Young Adult, Reserve Select, Retired Reserve and CHCBP, cover Wegovy for weight loss with prior authorization and a prescription from a network provider. TRICARE For Life and direct-care-only beneficiaries lost weight-loss drug coverage on August 31, 2025.

What TRICARE specifically requires

  • BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, hypertension or sleep apnea
  • At least 6 months of behavior change and dietary restriction without reaching the desired weight loss, and staying engaged during treatment
  • A 3-month trial of generic phentermine, benzphetamine, diethylpropion or phendimetrazine that did not produce 5% weight loss, unless contraindicated or not tolerated
  • Not used with another GLP-1 (e.g., Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity)
  • Approval: 12 months; renewal needs at least 5% loss from baseline after full dose titration (4% for ages 12 to 17)
