Is melatonin safe для long-term use?

Reviewed by the WeighedHealth Editorial Team against primary clinical sources — FDA labeling, peer-reviewed trials, and specialty-society guidelines.
Content current as of July 2026; updated when guidance or availability changes.
Melatonin is generally regarded as safe для adults short-term (1-3 months) at low doses (0.3-1 mg). Long-term safety data is sparse — most studies don't extend beyond 6 months. Concerns include: (1) suppression of natural melatonin production (theoretical, evidence mixed), (2) increased risk of vivid dreams and morning grogginess at doses >3 mg, (3) hormonal effects in adolescents (delayed puberty signal in animal studies — avoid use в children/teens without pediatrician oversight), (4) dependence concerns (psychological more than physical — sleep onset anxiety when stopping). Most retail melatonin products contain 3-10 mg, which is 10-30x the physiologic dose. A 0.3-0.5 mg dose 1-2 hours before bed is sufficient для most circadian regulation. Higher doses don't improve sleep onset and worsen morning function.
