Pick your carrier — see which GLP-1 medications are covered
Most Aetna commercial plans cover GLP-1 medications for type 2 diabetes; coverage for weight loss varies significantly by employer plan design. Prior authorization is standard.
Coverage by drug
- Wegovy (semaglutide)Covered (prior auth required)
Aetna covers Wegovy on most commercial plans when the patient meets clinical criteria and prior authorization is approved. The obesity-drug benefit must be included in the specific employer plan.
- Zepbound (tirzepatide)Covered (prior auth required)
Aetna formulary status for Zepbound mirrors Wegovy for most commercial plans. Same prior authorization process and clinical criteria apply.
- Ozempic (semaglutide)Covered
Aetna covers Ozempic broadly for type 2 diabetes. Prior auth is standard but approval is straightforward with a T2D diagnosis. Off-label weight-loss use is NOT covered.
- Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Covered
Aetna covers Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes with prior authorization. Coverage and copay similar to Ozempic.
- Saxenda (liraglutide)Covered (prior auth required)
Aetna's Saxenda coverage has narrowed as newer GLP-1s have entered the market; many plans now require step-through to Wegovy first.
Coverage data reflects general carrier policies — your specific plan within Aetna may differ. Always confirm with your plan's member services or formulary lookup before assuming coverage.
