Insurance coverage for Wegovy in New York
NY Medicaid (NYRx) excludes drugs used for weight loss under 18 NYCRR §505.3(g)(3). GLP-1s are covered only for Medicaid-covered indications such as type 2 diabetes.
| Carrier | Wegovy status | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Aetna | Covered (prior auth required) | Aetna's Wegovy policy (4774-C) approves adults with a baseline BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition, after at least 6 months in a comprehensive weight management program. The first approval lasts 7 months. Whether your plan includes weight-loss drugs at all depends on your plan. |
| Blue Cross Blue Shield | Varies by plan | Each Blue Cross Blue Shield company sets its own coverage, and several have dropped weight-loss GLP-1s. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts ended coverage at plan renewals from January 1, 2026 (employers with more than 100 employees may keep it), and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan ended it for fully insured large groups from January 1, 2025. Check your own Blue plan's drug list. |
| UnitedHealthcare | Covered (prior auth required) | UnitedHealthcare covers Wegovy for weight loss only on plans whose sponsor elected weight-loss medication coverage; its 2026 program calls this optional. Where it applies, the first approval lasts 5 months and renewal requires at least 5% weight loss from baseline. |
| Cigna | Covered (prior auth required) | Cigna publishes BMI-tiered versions of its Wegovy criteria, and your plan determines which applies. Each requires at least 3 months of behavior change and diet before starting, gives an 8-month first approval, and requires at least 5% weight loss for renewal. |
| Humana | Limited coverage | Humana no longer sells employer group commercial medical plans, so this applies to Humana Medicare drug plans. Part D does not cover Wegovy used only for weight loss, but since July 1, 2026 eligible members can get Wegovy for $50 a month through the federal Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. See the Medicare page for Bridge criteria. |
| Kaiser Permanente | Limited coverage | Kaiser Permanente Northwest covers Wegovy for weight loss only for members whose plan includes weight-loss drugs, and only after a 3-month trial of at least two cheaper weight-loss medicines. In California, Kaiser stopped covering GLP-1s for weight loss alone in January 2025; they remain covered inside disease-management programs such as diabetes care. |
| Anthem | Varies by plan | Whether an Anthem commercial plan covers Wegovy for weight loss depends on the plan document, and we have not found public Anthem commercial criteria for it. Anthem's California Medi-Cal plan stopped covering Wegovy for weight loss on January 1, 2026, and still considers it for MASH or cardiovascular disease. |
| Medicare | Limited coverage | Part D still excludes Wegovy used only for weight loss, but from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge covers Wegovy injections and tablets for $50 a month for eligible enrollees. Part D plans can also cover Wegovy for MASH and for cardiovascular risk reduction. |
| Medicaid | Varies by plan | Each state decides. KFF counted 13 state Medicaid programs covering GLP-1s for obesity in January 2026, down from 16 in October 2025; Massachusetts then ended coverage on July 3, 2026, leaving 12 or fewer as of July 2026. Check your state's preferred drug list. |
| TRICARE | Covered (prior auth required) | TRICARE Prime and Select, plus Young Adult, Reserve Select, Retired Reserve and CHCBP, cover Wegovy for weight loss with prior authorization and a prescription from a network provider. TRICARE For Life and direct-care-only beneficiaries lost weight-loss drug coverage on August 31, 2025. |
| GEHA | Covered (prior auth required) | GEHA covers Wegovy in 2026 with prior authorization. It became non-preferred on the High, Standard, HDHP and Elevate Plus plans on January 1, 2026, which can raise your out-of-pocket cost, and stays preferred on the Elevate plan. |
| Veterans Affairs (VA) | Covered (prior auth required) | The VA applies national criteria for use to Wegovy in weight management (April 2026). Veterans need documented participation in a comprehensive lifestyle intervention, such as MOVE!, within the past year, and a BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition. |

Compounded semaglutide
On April 30, 2026, FDA proposed not to include semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide on the 503B bulks list, which would stop outsourcing facilities from compounding them from bulk ingredients. The comment period was extended to July 30, 2026. As of September 15, 2026, no final decision has been published. The proposal does not address 503A compounding for an individual patient's documented clinical need.
